#TimeToTalk day. What a fantastic idea! Breaking the stigma!
I am inspired by the people who speak out on social media about their mental health issues but I personally would never dream about opening up about my daily struggles.
1. Who cares and 2. I don’t want people I know judging me.
But it feels wrong to not voice it, to not join in with the the #timetotalk movement to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues – but I’m too scared to. I don’t want people gossiping about me, or calling me an attention seeker. Those people who don’t truly understand what it’s like to struggle with poor mental health who are so quick to pass judgement. But that’s the stigma – without speaking out, there will always be this judgment. I should join in…
I’d love to write a simple post on my private social media accounts about #timetotalk day but… I’m afraid.
So as always, I stick to being anonymous so I can’t be judged.

Even if you choose not to disclose your own mental health problems, it’s still useful to raise your voice in support of the cause. Disclosure is something that should only happen on your own terms and in your own time.

You’re so right and I have retweeted and shared things to support it in the past but I think it’s inspiring to see when so many people come out the woodwork and say without shame that they too struggle with mental health problems. I feel like I should too and break the stigma. Why am I hiding in shame?

I think people who disclose without shame don’t get to that point right away. As long as stigma still exists, that shame barrier is going to be there to have to work through.

Learning to be open about your mental health is a real journey. It can take time to learn what you want to disclose and what you want to remain private. It takes a lot of self acceptance to be able to openly say you have mental health difficulties, and be able to shut anyone down who says something naive or ignorant, or something generally idiotic about mental health.
It really takes time. I started talking about mine online and anon, and slowly I progressed towards not giving a shit anymore. At the same time, just because of time to talk and the message, if you’re really uncomfortable then that’s fine too. Come as you are, a corner of the internet will always accept you for who you are.

Thank you so much! You make complete sense, I think I might just take the plunge and post something tomorrow. Just not too personal 😊 i feel like by owning it, I’ll be accepting myself for who I am and not being ashamed anymore 😊
